Job Posting: Summer Program Facilitator

Term: 9 weeks (June 15 – August 21, 2026)

Rate: $20/hour (37.5 hours/week average)

Who You Are

We are looking for three summer program facilitators to join our team. You will work with and support Story Planet’s lead facilitators to plan and deliver creative writing summer programming for children and youth.

To be considered for these roles, you must:

  • Have a lived connection to the Kingston-Galloway/Orton Park (KGO) community in Scarborough, whether as a current/former resident or through significant local ties. (Please note that the boundaries of KGO for our purposes are  Ellesmere Road to the north, Lake Ontario to the south, Markham Road to the west, and Manse/Conlins Road to the east.)

  • Be 18–29 years old (per our funders’ requirements) and a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee status.

  • Provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Police Check.

  • Have a background working with children or youth in a camp, classroom, or community-based setting.

  • Have an interest and/or practice in writing, visual arts, digital media, community arts, or related fields.

  • Have a proactive, "can-do" attitude!

About the Role

Story Planet helps children and youth find their voices through the power of storymaking. As a summer program facilitator, you will play a key role in sparking imagination and building literacy through two core programs:

  • Scarborough (KGO) Creative Writing Camp: During this two-week, all day camp you will work directly with youth aged 8–11 in the KGO community, fostering a fun and inclusive environment for creative expression.

  • The Picture Book Project: Mentor students aged 11–13 through the full creative process during this half-day, two-week camp. You’ll support them from initial brainstorming and writing to illustrating and preparing their very own books for publication.

  • Program Administration: Support the "behind-the-scenes" magic by assisting with session planning, material preparation, and creative development.

Location & Travel

This role involves working across multiple sites. While the primary summer camps are located in the KGO community in Scarborough), administrative days and additional training will take place at our Story Planet storefront at 986 Bathurst.

What You’ll Do

Working alongside our lead facilitators, you will:

  • Co-Design & Lead: Collaborate on weekly schedules and lead engaging creative activities that inspire campers to tell their stories.

  • Mentor youth: Provide one-on-one and small-group support to help youth navigate the creative process.

  • Publish student books: Assist in the editorial journey, including transcribing youth stories and supporting layout and font selection to bring their books to life.

  • Help plan a book launch: Help curate and prepare materials for our October book launch (Note: While prep happens now, the event itself falls outside this contract).

  • Support program operations: Manage daily logistics, including snack coordination, attendance tracking, and supervising local field trips.

  • Promote participants’ well-being: Ensure a safe, inclusive, and positive environment.

  • Prep materials: Organize and prep creative supplies at the Bathurst storefront to ensure camps run smoothly.

Compensation 

  • Compensation: $20/hour

  • Schedule: Approximately 37.5 hours per week. Please note that hours may fluctuate slightly during active camp weeks to accommodate program needs and special events.

  • Support: Training at our office at 986 Bathurst, mentorship from program leads, and CPR certification.

  • Travel: Story Planet covers shared Uber rides from workshop locations to the nearest subway station on a needs-only basis.
